Welcome to my very first attempt at using the Rhino CAD software. While i do have some small experience with Fusion 360 from a previous class, i feel like this might hold me back more than help me as i will get the two mixed up constantly. Which i did, all the time! A lot of the commands are rather similar or the same but with differing names and ways they can be used. Getting them mixed up was a huge hassle but the ability to just type in the name of a command that i knew was so convenient! The entire week i had to make this i have been extremely sick with pneumonia, making everything oh so much harder than it had to be but i did the best i could with the amount of brain cells i had remaining after all the NyQuil.
For this project i decided to take inspiration from childhood and cartoons. What do you see when you think of a castle? for me, the most important thing is the giant draw bridge and a mote! So that is where we will start!
I decided to block in the basic shapes first, starting with the drawbridge as a reference for the size of the rest of the castle. Just getting the basic shapes down took me embarrassingly long to get down but i am happy with how it came out so far. I realized that the rounded "towers" needed to be longer after this and so i adjusted some of the sizes of things before moving on. I used rectangle and sphere poly lines here and extruded them to desired height.
Still adding more buildings and adjusting sizes here but decided it needed more. I really wanted it to have the brick effects but really had no idea how to do it so blank empty walls it is i suppose for now!
Adding the lofts on the tops of the towers was quite difficult for me, i couldn't figure out why it would only let me select the entire shape sometimes and would sometimes only select the "edge" and not allow me to loft. I had to sort of "cheat" it by adding extra poly lines and used it to loft to that instead of the actual shape, then used 'boolean union' to combine them. Basically adding extra poly lines on top of the old ones and then removing old ones that didn't work.
I am now at the point where i will be adding details like windows, doors, and the castle aesthetics like the "toothed" tops of the towers and walkways. This is the part i had the most difficulty with. I could not for the life of me figure out how to cut out the windows and doors, don't know why it just wouldn't work for me. more experimenting and messing around to figure it out needed. Also trying to decide if i should add a landscape to add the mote. But how? and would it just make it look worse? probably not a good idea to do with my lack of skills and knowledge. Maybe next time when i have learned more.
To add the toothed details to the top of the castle i used a series of rectangles and used 'boolean difference' to cut them out. this took some time to make all the different rectangles in the spaces they needed to be but looked so cool after, and well worth the time. It was at this point i tried to make the windows and doors at the same time, but i kept getting these '!' icons and it wouldn't cut out the door...i could not figure out what these were, how to get rid of them or what they meant so i had to keep deleting what i had done and attempting it from another method.
I did eventually figure it out, i somehow had a few different layers i just needed to 'boolean union' or delete all the extra unnecessary layers and i was able to make my windows and doors easy. I even made a teeny tiny chain that pulls up the drawbridge! And now my castle is complete! I'm really excited about how this came out. While i did have my issues and had a lot to learn and discover, i found this program much easier and intuitive to use than the other CAD programs i have tried and will likely keep using this CAD software for my own projects at home from now on!
I'm very happy and impressed with my tiny chain i made, I used a series of spheres, placed them in the shape of chains, and connected multiple together to the proper length, then resized to proper proportions. I love that i can make something like this in a large scale for easier modeling and then adjust the size as needed AFTER its made for my projects! Cant do that in Fusion 360! Please bask in its glory with me! That's all for today's project, keep on crafting! Goodnight!
Very Charming
